Additional Details

The Southwest Battery was built at the tip of Manhattan in 1811 to defend the harbor during the War of 1812 but never saw any action. After the army vacated the newly named Castle Clinton in 1821, New York City installed a restaurant and entertainment center and renamed the structure Castle Gardens. In 1855 the Castle changed hands again and became an immigrant processing center run by New York State. Thirty-four years later the immigration center shut down and the New York Aquarium moved in. The Aquarium remained a popular attraction until the 1940s when it too shut down and became the Castle Clinton National Monument.
