The Wyoming Stock Growers Association was a consortium of the larger cattle owners. Since most cattle grazed freely on non-fenced in land, mavericks (unmarked strays) were sold at auction to benefit the Association. Non-Association members who branded mavericks were deemed rustlers and were often hung.<
