Watercolor, pen and ink on paper. 260x356 mm; 10 1/4x14 inches, archivally framed to 21x25 inches. Signed in lower right image. A first edition of this book signed by Pinkney accompanies this lot.

Jerry Pinkney has won numerous awards for his body of over 100 illustrated books, including the coveted Caldecott Medal for 2010 for which he is the first African-American artist to hold that honor. He is also the first illustrator to be honored with a full-scale retrospective of his work at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Watercolors for his best-known works rarely, if ever, come on the auction market.
