Little Bear and His Parents. Together, two works including both the pencil study and the finished watercolor from Maurice Sendak's 'Little Bear' series as reworked for the leporello "Bears of the World" (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1981) which featured 10 images of bears by various artists. The study, graphite on tracing paper. 203x127 mm; 8x5 inches, on 11 1/2x8-inch sheet. The finished drawing, watercolor, pen, and ink on paper. 191x114 mm; 7 1/2x4 1/2 inches, on 10x7 3/4-inch sheet. Both signed in lower right, the study dated "Feb 4 '81," the finished drawing dating "Feb '81." Archivally hinged together in double window matte; framed. Accompanied by a partial sketch with notations on yellowed tracing paper. A copy of the published work is included with the artwork.

"Bears of the World" was the first joint project between the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) and the International Reading Association (IRA), created to promote literacy in children.
