early printings of the rare sixpenny toy books. Originally issued anonymously, these pamphlets proved to be so popular that the public demanded to know the artist. Routledge finally capitulated in 1873 and reissued them as Walter Crane's Toy Books with a new standard Japanesque cover of a crane and a flock of baby birds designed by Crane. When he demanded a royalty and Routledge refused, Crane ended his association with the series.
