Additional Details

first edition, second impression of montgomery's beloved tale of an orphan girl. The inspiration for the novel came from a story she remembered from childhood about a couple who were mistakenly sent an orphan girl instead of a boy, yet decided to keep her. She likewise drew upon her own childhood experiences in rural Prince Edward Island. Montgomery used a photograph of Evelyn Nesbit, clipped from an American magazine and pasted on the wall above her desk as the model for main character Anne Shirley.
