first edition, inscribed (presumably) by the wife of the publisher, "From Mrs. Jarrold. Bracondale." The binding is similar to Carter's variant B in that the horse's head and rustic portions of the frame are in black while the floral decoration, reins and panels are in gilt, but here the title in black (not gilt).
