Most of these letters were received during Saavedra''s term as Chilean Minister of War from 1878 to 1879, leading up to the War of the Pacific. 5 letters from historian Benjamin Vicuña Mackenna (see lot 332) discuss the boundary dispute with Argentina, as well as the Montt presidency of the 1850s. 8 letters are from Argentine consul Mariano de Sarratea (see lot 326).
