Wealthy landowner Emilia Herrera de Toro held unusual political influence for a 19th-century South American woman, and was once called "one of the remarkable characters of Chile" (Carpenter''s South America, 1900). She was the sister-in-law of Mariano de Sarratea (see lot 326). This lot includes 13 letters from Presidents Pinto and Santa María of Chile, 20 letters from Presidents Mitre, Sarmiento, and Sáenz-Peña of Argentina, and 13 letters from other prominent Argentines and Chileans.
