TWO CLASSICS OF CHILEAN JOURNALISM (CHILE.) El Padre Cobos. 2 volumes. Folio, contemporary 1/4 calf; brittle pages with some tearing, as usual. Santiago, 7 June 1881 to 6 February 1885

Additional Details

2 bound volumes of a bi-weekly newspaper edited by democratic leader Juan Rafael Allende, who was noted for his anti-clericalism. Each 4-page newspaper featured news on the outer pages, and a striking lithographic editorial cartoon covering the entire 2-page spread within. Allende left El Padre Cobos in 1884 to found a new paper (see below); his name disappears from the masthead after the 23 August 1884 issue, and it continues under publisher Buenaventura Moran. These volumes cover a dramatic period in Chilean history, including the later part of their War of the Pacific against Peru and Bolivia.
