Additional Details

first american edition, in superb condition. Gardiner led an 1850 missionary expedition to Tierra del Fuego, then claimed by both Chile and Argentina. Finding the local Yagáns quite hostile to his efforts, he and his party starved on desolate Isla Picton the following year. This work includes part of Gardiner's diary, recovered later by a rescue party. Only two copies traced (Drew University and AAS), both with a slightly different Carlton & Porter imprint. Spence Antarctic Miscellany 498; not in Palau or Sabin.
