A spectacular album containing 62 photographs of China, including views of Hong Kong's harbor and famous Queen's Road, a 3-part panorama of an area north of Canton and images of the city's pagodas, interiors and canals, Shanghai, flower boats, outdoor markets, a hairdresser, formal portraits, prisoners, and Mr. Sharp's affecting execution scene, among much more. Albumen prints, nearly all approximately 8 1/4x10 1/2 inches (30x26.7 cm.) and the reverse, all with captions, in pencil, and some with additional captions in ink, on mounts recto; 9 with letterpress captions laid in; one with a caption in the negative. Oblong folio, gilt-lettered leather, lightly worn, front joint cracked, backstrip partially detached; all edges gilt. 1880s

Additional Details

Several of these images (including the "Wu-Chou Kswangsi execution scene" which is here captioned "Nanking") appear in the book Imperial China--Photographs 1850-1912, and are attributed to Saunders.
