Additional Details

Li Hongzhang (1823-1901) was China's leading military figure of the late 19th century, and at this time was the powerful Viceroy of Zhili. Former United States president Ulysses S. Grant had embarked on a long world tour after leaving the White House in 1877. He met with General Hongzhang during his visit to China in 1879, and helped mediate China's dispute with Japan over the Ryukyu Islands. Mounted with a Letter Signed by retired rear admiral Francis J. Higginson (1843-1931), Kingston, NY, 27 April 1931, presenting this photograph as a gift to a judge, believed to be Gilbert D.B. Hasbrouck (1860-1942) of Kingston as identified on the frame.
