Additional Details

Beginning in 1927, the United States dispatched the 4th Marine Regiment to guard American citizens and property in the Shanghai International Settlement. The 4th Marines served with distinction throughout the increasingly turbulent periods of the Northern Expedition, the Chinese Civil War, and the Second Sino-Japanese War. Corporal George served with an early group of Marines in Shanghai and his time there is nicely documented in this group. The journal mentions combat with the enemy in cursory detail.
