(CITY PLANNING)
Manuscript journal kept by a City Commissioner detailing the proposed widening of Mill Street between Broad and William Streets. [New York, 1835]. 39 pages. Tall 4to, original wrappers.

Additional Details

This journal provides a fascinating insight into the early period of New York city planning. It begins with a true copy of the Supreme Court application for the proposed widening and continues with several pages of the minutes of the meetings of the Commissioners on the matter. Most of the journal, however, is comprised of a detailed accounting of the damages and benefits to specific land and building owners. The total amount of damages by widening the street was estimated at over $160,000. Nevertheless, the project was passed, upheld by the court and completed the following year. The manuscript appears to be in the hand of Charles Dusenberry, with his signature on the front wrapper.
