Additional Details

The Southern Conference Educational Fund was active from 1942 to 1981, working on a variety of civil rights issues in the South: voting rights, desegregation, as well as labor and environmental issues that offered opportunities for partnerships with progressive white southerners. This run of their monthly newsletter is nearly complete from October 1966 through May 1969 (all on coated white paper stock), plus 8 other scattered issues through 1976 (all printed on newsprint). It includes detailed coverage of civil rights issues, extending well beyond the SCEF's own activities. The earliest issues in this lot include extensive coverage of SNCC's work with the Lowndes County Freedom Organization. We are aware of no other substantial runs of the Southern Patriot at auction.

Also included in the lot are 30 SCEF circulars and fliers sent to a member during the same period. Some of these are photocopied circular letters from prominent SCEF leaders and supporters, including Pete Seeger, Carl and Ann Braden, and the fund's president Fred Shuttlesworth.
