Additional Details

The wrapper reads "I Gave," along with the SCLC address, and names Ralph Abernathy and Billy Hollins as officers; it also features a photograph of Abernathy with Martin Luther King. SCLC held two national fundraising "Tag Days" in commemoration of Dr. King's assassination, on 5 April 1969 and 18 April 1970. One newspaper article named William Hollins as the coordinator for the 1970 Tag Day, explaining that "tags will be given out that read 'I Gave' in bold red letters, with a photo of Dr. King and the SCLC's current president, Ralph David Abernathy"; another explained that "volunteers will carry Tag Day cans for donations" (Madison Capital Times, 14 April 1970; Columbia State, 3 April 1970). Another example of the can is held by the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.
