Additional Details

The East St. Louis Riots of 1917 were sparked by union assaults against Black strikebreakers at an aluminum plant, which swiftly escalated into generalized mob attacks on the city's entire Black community. Many dozens died, and whole city blocks were burned. The magnitude of the violence sparked national outrage, a high threshold during this dismal period in American race relations. This detailed Congressional investigation includes many disturbing details, although it was triggered only because the riots interrupted train service and interstate commerce. 5 in OCLC, and none traced at auction.
