Additional Details

Archibald Grimké (1849-1930) was born into slavery in South Carolina. His white aunts Sarah and Angelina Grimké had been prominent abolitionists, but his white father was most decidedly not. Archibald later escaped during the Civil War after being sold by his half-brother. He graduated from Lincoln University and Harvard Law School, and became a prominent journalist and activist in Boston. He was among the founders of the NAACP.

This well-known portrait of Grimké was produced by Washington's Donaldson Studio, active at this address from 1901 onward.
