To Sarah Alice Haldeman Addams, sister of Jane Addams of Hull House, "Compliments of the author" with a word corrected in the beginning of the first sermon: "Despondency is a state of mind where all--(''feeling'' crossed out and ''hope'' substituted in ink)--seems to be lost." A series of sermons on civil rights by Francis Grimke (1850-1937), Presbyterian minister and civil rights activist. Grimke was among the more radical black leaders of his day, openly critical of Booker T. Washington''s more passive approach to solving the Negro''s problems.
