The 1960s saw numerous "race riots." The 1967 Detroit riots began after the police raided what they thought was an after-hours drinking club, or "blind pig," as they were called. Instead they found a private party of some 83 men celebrating the return of two Viet Nam veterans. The police began to arrest all of the men and called for back-up while an angry crowd began to assemble outside. Before long, one of the bloodiest riots of the 1960s erupted. After 5 days of rioting, 43 people lay dead, 1189 injured and over 7000 people had been arrested. Other photographs include the 1965 Watts riots in Los Angeles and the 1966 San Francisco riots.
