first edition. Angelo Herndon was arrested while trying to organize voters in the Deep South of the 1930s. Convicted by the courts of Georgia under an antiquated statute that made the assembly of more than a handful of black people a punishable crime, Herndon was sentenced to twenty years hard labor on the chain gang. His case and that of the Scottsboro Boys became the rallying points for the early civil rights movement.
