Additional Details

Angelo Herndon (1913-1997) was an African American organizer who was trying to register voters in Georgia. The Georgia authorities arrested him on an old anti-insurrection statute that forbid the assembly of Negroes (slaves), punishable by 16 to 20 years on a Georgia chain gang. His cause was taken up along with that of the Scottsboro Boys among the first issues to galvanize the general American public.
