Additional Details

On 4 February 1999, unarmed Guinean immigrant Amadou Diallo was standing in front of his Bronx apartment, and was asked to show identification by four policemen. When he reached for his wallet, he was killed by a hail of 41 bullets. The killing triggered national protests, but the officers were later acquitted of all charges.

This protest sign was apparently carried at a Capitol Hill march against police brutality, just eleven days after Diallo's brutal execution. Included with the sign is the 18 February 1999 issue of The Community News, a Washington weekly, with a cover story on the demonstration. It includes photographs of three very similar hand-painted signs. A clipping from the same newspaper is affixed to the sign. Also included is a flier from the same protest, describing the march route from the White House to the Department of Justice to the Capitol.
