Additional Details

This group photograph is accompanied by a scrapbook page with related ephemera from the same conference, including name tags for attendees Calvin "Skippy" Parker and Theresa Alexander, a ticket for a steamer excursion, and the convention program. The program describes the arrangements for the group photograph: "On Friday, July 3, at 12:15 o'clock, a photograph of all delegates, members, and visitors will be taken. The photographer will exhibit proofs Friday afternoon, and orders can be placed for delivery before leaving Baltimore." The photograph was taken on the steps of Sharp Street Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church, where a young lawyer named Thurgood Marshall had just given a presentation on "Methods of Fighting Educational Inequalities." The photographer Paul Henderson (1899-1988) had a long career at the Baltimore Afro-American and was recently the subject of a major exhibit at the Maryland Historical Society. We know of no other Henderson photographs at auction.
