Byard Jenkins was routinely arrested following the murder of Kathryn Meller in June 1948. Jenkins, an iceman's helper, had delivered ice to the Meller apartment earlier that day. In fact, Jenkins had come to the police station voluntarily to tell what he knew. Two hours later the police obtained a "confession" from him.<
