Additional Details

A later print of this ghastly spectacle. Accused of rape, these three African American circus workers, Elias Clayton, Elmer Jackson, and Isaac McGhie, were attacked and lynched by a mob in Duluth, Minnesota. Rumors had circulated that six African Americans had raped and robbed a teenage girl. A physician's examination subsequently found no evidence of rape or assault. The entire affair was based on rumor only. The entire nation was shocked by the act, especially since the lynching had occurred in a Northern state. In 2003, the city of Duluth erected a bronze and marble memorial, "Impossible to Remain Silent," to the three murder victims.
