Additional Details

This is one of a series of five Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee posters featuring the work of civil rights photographer Danny Lyon. It depicts protesters kneeling in prayer at a segregated swimming pool in Cairo, IL on 13 or 14 July 1962. At left is 22-year-old SNCC organizer John Lewis. He would soon go on to serve as chairman of SNCC, and has been a United States Congressman for the past three decades. In 2017, Lewis posted the image on his Twitter account, with the message "The young people kneeling today are following a long tradition. #TakeAKnee #goodtrouble."
