Additional Details

The Madisonville Case is a classic example of three black men being accused of the rape of a white woman. These photographs show two of the men being protected from a lynch mob following their conviction. Though the evidence against the three was "very thin," two were convicted and sentenced to death and the third, who "confessed" that he had only held the woman down, was given a life sentence. It was later determined that the sheriff had bribed the third man.
