(CIVIL RIGHTS.) March for Freedom Now! Poster, 28 x 22 inches, on light board; minor dampstaining in lower left, minor wear. Chicago, IL, [July 1960]

Additional Details

This poster was printed for a protest at the 1960 Republican Convention, where more than 5000 marchers including Martin Luther King, A. Philip Randolph and Roy Wilkins demanded a conference with the Republican National Committee and a civil rights plank in the party platform. An image of the sign can be seen in a photograph of the protesters in the next day's Chicago Tribune, 26 June 1960. The march appears to have been successful. The platform which Richard Nixon ran on that November included a pledge for 'the full use of power, resources and leadership of the Federal Government to eliminate discrimination based on race, color, religion or national origin.' No other examples traced in OCLC or at auction.
