(CIVIL RIGHTS.) PENOLOGY Untitled group photograph of a Negro chain-gang. Albumen print, 6- 3/4x8- 1/2 inches on a larger photographer's mount; some staining and discoloration to the surface. Southern United States, circa 1890s-1900

Additional Details

An unusual photograph of a large group of chain-gang prisoners in classic "stripes." To the far left a group of five whites pose for the photographer. One of them, possibly a sheriff, points a six-shooter to the sky. A woman stands close to him, and next to her are three others. The chain-gang was probably hired out, or as was common, working on the warden''s own farm.
