Additional Details

"Says he's quitting SNCC--John R. Lewis, 26, an officer and former chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, said today in Atlanta that he is quitting the organization. 'There is a danger in SNCC of fumbling the ball,' he said. He said he disagrees with SNCC's new slogan of 'Black Power,' but did not specify that as his reason for resigning." His replacement as head of SNCC was Stokely Carmichael. Lewis next served as an associate director of the Field Foundation; his career in Congress began in 1986.
