Additional Details

The Mississippi Freedom Labor Union was founded in Shaw, MS in April 1965, and quickly gained a thousand members. 200 cotton choppers went on strike on 30 April. Civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer was a prominent supporter. The union seems to have been less active after 1966.
