Additional Details

A minor but interesting skirmish in the history of the Civil Rights movement, attempting to enforce Dwight Eisenhower's promise to end segregation in the capital city under his presidency. "The official inaugural committee says that District hotels and restaurants have been asked not to discriminate against colored citizens for the three days of the inaugural. we say: democracy is a year-round affair. . . . Insist on service in any restaurant you wish to enter. If you are refused, remind the manager of the Inaugural Committee's promise."
