three very scarce cards, printed up by the white citizens council and the klan in Little Rock during the period of de-segregation there. One, "White Trash Matthews," referring to the principal of Little Rock High, bears a poem of sorts: That white trash Matthews Named Jess/ Sure got Central High in a Mess/ The Kids-if they're White/ He Deprives of their Rights/ He's a Kansas Nigger-Lover, I guess." Another, "Permit Good Indefinitely. Bearer may freely and energetically kick the rumps of Virgil Blossom, Jess Matthews, Harry Ashmore, Woodrow Mann, Lee Lorch, Dunbar Ogden, Daisy Bates, and Archie House, who conned me into goofing when I should have been golfing. Spiked shoes recommended. Signed Dwight D. Eichenhauser, Goofus in Chief. The reference is to eight of the Little Rock Nine, and President Eisenhower, with an attempt at giving the President's name a Jewish spelling---Jews were as much the enemy to the Klan as blacks. The third card reads "Permit. . . . Bearer may kick rumps of each CHS Negro once per day until above expiration. . .Signed Daisy Blossom." Provenance, a private collector, obtained from a collector in Little Rock.
