Additional Details

Travel for African Americans was complicated during the Jim Crow period. Where one could spend the night, or even fill the tank with gas was problematic. As a result, black-owned hotels and motels placed signs prominently in their windows. There were even special travel-guides to help African Americans plan their trips without incident. Victor Green's "Green Guide" and others provided lists, by state of colored hotels, motels and other travel-related businesses that catered to blacks.
