Additional Details

The Iron Brigade of the West was composed of several different units, including the 2nd, 6th, and 7th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, the 19th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and 24th Michigan. In proportion to its numbers the Brigade sustained the heaviest losses of any unit in the Civil War, fighting in some of the war's bloodiest battles, including Gettysburg and Second Bull Run. The origin of the name apparently came about in a conversation between Gens. Hooker and McClellan. Hooker referred to his proud men as "by the Eternal they are iron. . . men made of iron."
