". . . Holmes joined us after the Battle of the 18th. I think he arrived the next day . . . When Genl. Lee made me the remarks I repeated, I observed to him as you say, that while retreating he had fought several great battles which had done immense damage to the Enemy. Have you seen Hood's answer to some of Johnston's criticisms about him . . . I have not yet read the book but I am told that it has disappointed many of Johnston's warmest friends in presenting him always as a dissatisfied and disappointed officer unable to grapple manfully with the difficulties he had to overcome . . . The Miss. River has joined the 'carpet baggers' in robbing us of what little the latter had left us . . ."<
