Additional Details

The unmistakable Benjamin Butler is shown in his Major General uniform walking past a group of Black soldiers standing at attention. Butler was closely associated with Black soldiers through the war. He formed the 1st Louisiana Native Guard, the first Black regiment of the war, in September 1862; and commanded several other regiments of United States Colored Troops as part of his Army of the James. He commissioned a special medal for the 38th United States Colored Troops in honor of their bravery. The troops in the background of this drawing are slightly caricatured, but they look quite a bit better than Butler does.
