Additional Details

This pass was issued to civilians William Murphy Esq. and his wife, accompanied by W.F. Lantzinger, who were granted permission to go "over the bridges & within the lines." It was boldly signed by poet-soldier Drake de Kay as aide to General Mansfield, and then faintly countersigned by "W.T. Sherman" as colonel. Sherman began the war as a rather obscure officer, but had gained President Lincoln's attention with his distinguished service in the First Battle of Bull Run two weeks earlier. Lincoln promoted Sherman to brigadier general the day after this pass was issued.
