Additional Details

Sickles was one of the more colorful characters in the Union Army. A two-term U.S. Congressman, in 1859 he was acquitted of murdering his wife's lover, using the insanity defense. This commission is backdated to confirm the initial appointment of Sickles as colonel of the regiment he had recruited, with rank from 29 June 1861. He later reached the rank of Major General before losing a leg at Gettysburg.
