Additional Details

In retaliation for the killing of John Rodgers Meigs (which at the time was believed to have been unprovoked) Sheridan ordered towns in Virginia to be burned. The entire episode triggered a fair amount of controversy. This letter is of interest also for its information regarding a secret service agent.
