"I did misunderstand the movements of the enemy in Crawford's front. I thought they first threatened him then moved off to its right, our left. Have you heard the result of the attack on Gregg's Cavalry yet?"
Written in the midst of the 1864 Shenendoah Valley Campaign, as Union forces were attempting to draw out the Confederate defense of Richmond and squeeze Petersburg. On September 29, in a two pronged attack, Grant captured Fort Harrison but Union forces were repulsed at Fort Gilmer. Meanwhile, south of Petersburg, 4 Union divisions supported by David Gregg's cavalry unsuccessfully attempted to cut the Boynton Plank Road and the Southside Railroad.
