Additional Details

The caption is difficult to read, but may be "George W. Cowan [or Conway?], a planter private [illegible] in Stafford County, sketched by Oliver Goldman of Co. H, 17th Pa. Cav., 1863." The 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry was stationed at Stafford Court House early in 1863 before moving on to Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.
