(CIVIL WAR.) Group of 3 amnesty oaths signed by former Confederates. Partly-printed documents, completed in manuscript, various sizes; creases and folds. Matted together in 450x885-mm frame. Not examined out of frame. Vp, 1864-1868

Additional Details

Former Confederates were required to sign oaths of loyalty before regaining citizenship and voting rights in the United States. The language of these 3 oaths differs slightly, but each requires the signer to "defend the Constitution of the United States," particularly in reference to the emancipation of slaves.

Oath signed by Thomas K. Davis. Witnessed by a notary public, with his inked and embossed stamps, and a revenue stamp. Two small filing holes, not affecting text. Washington, 26 May 1868 Oath signed by Arthur McMurtry [a former corporal in the 26th Texas Cavalry]. Witnessed by Capt. [Harry W.] Beard [of the 30th Missouri Infantry], Provost Marshal. Headed "Amnesty Oath." The printed form refers to "the existing rebellion," but it was signed two months after the war ended. Galveston, TX, 6 July 1865 Oath signed by Edward Cousinard. Witnessed by Lt. Col. Don A. Pardee of the 42nd Ohio Infantry, Provost Marshal. East Baton Rouge, LA, 30 January 1864.
