(CIVIL WAR.) HALLECK, HENRY W. Autograph Endorsement Signed, "H.W. Halleck / M[ajor]G[eneral] Ch[ie]fofstaff," recommending that no appointments be made until General Grant's proposal to reorganize the 8th and 19th corps is approved, on verso of fragment of letter from Assistant Adjutant General Samuel Fletcher Chalfin. Chalfin's letter, to unknown recipient (lacking salutation), suggesting that officers of the recently abolished 19th corps be discharged from duty under assignment or appointment, followed by a note by Inspector General James Allen Hardie conveying the Secretary of War's order that the matter be referred to General Halleck. 1 page, 7 3/4x3 1/4 inches, vertically ruled paper; each line of Chalfin's letter truncated at left edge (but only minor loss to text), faint bleedthrough, faint toning at right edge.
