Hamlin," as Vice President, to temperance leader George Henry Shirley, promising to send someone to the men Shirley lists in a day or two, agreeing to help Wakeman but explaining that he is busy in Butler's absence, observing that despite the president's friendliness his hopes will likely be frustrated, noting that Shirley's guess was correct concerning Washburn and Blaine. 1 1/4 pages, 8vo, with integral blank; small card pasted to integral blank on which is written an unrelated Longfellow poem in unknown hand, faint scattered soiling, folds. Washington, 11 January 1865

Additional Details

". . . If I ever see Wakeman, I will be happy to bestow any courtesy in my power. I am very busy and have no one to help me, as Mr. Butler is not here, and will not be until next week.
". . . The President is really very friendly but I have really no faith that any thing will come because it is so. But we shall see what we shall see and that is about all that can be said.
"You hit the nail on the head when you infer what may have been the cause of Washburn and Blaine. They were Fessenden's Lieut. Generals."
