". . . I have regretted more than I can express [Bates] not having perused some manuscripts in my possession before writing his glorious work on Gettysburg. His Narrative as it now stands is magnificent, and he may be unwilling to change it on seeing the evidence I now have in my possession and which I think he has not yet seen . . ."
