Additional Details

In the Battle of Fort Wagner on 18 July 1863, Brigadier General George Crockett Strong led one of the two Union brigades into battle. Among the six regiments under his command was the famous 54th Massachusetts, an African-American regiment which led the charge. During the ensuing battle, Strong was severely wounded in the thigh, and died twelve days later. The battle was immortalized in the film Glory. On the day of Strong's death, the General in Chief wrote this letter recommending that Strong receive an honorary brevet promotion, a request which was swiftly granted.
