Additional Details

In the early 20th century, John E. Boos of Albany, NY collected personal reminiscences of Lincoln and the Civil War. Some of these memories were published as "Abraham Lincoln: Farewell to Neighbors" in 1942. This particular letter is from Alfred C. Wallin of Washington, a veteran of the 31st Wisconsin Infantry. Wallin passes on a story illustrating Ulysses S. Grant's phenomenal memory for faces, in which he recognized a soldier in 1863 whom he had met briefly in civilian life in the late 1850s. Wallin also recalls Sherman's character. With partial typed transcript.
